A big misconception in rowing is: “I can eat whatever I want!”
Come learn how you can make sport nutrition as practical and approachable as possible. Our speaker will discuss that healthy eating can be simple, delicious, and performance enhancing!
Bring a notebook!
Our speaker for the evening includes:
Performance Dietitian, USRowing Association
Elizabeth Fusco, MS, RDN
About our speaker:
Liz grew up in the Berkshire Mountains of Western MA, where she spent her childhood exploring the outdoors, hiking, biking, swimming, and wakeboarding. She received her Bachelors in Dietetics with a minor in Kinesiology at the University of Rhode Island in 2011. She was also a competitive dinghy sailor for the URI Rams.
While at URI, she assisted with nutrition, exercise, and eating rate research. After a teaching assistantship in her mentor’s sport nutrition course, she was determined to pursue sport dietetics as a career.
While pursuing master’s degrees in Exercise Physiology and Nutrition Science at San Diego State University, Liz began an assistantship at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center in 2012. She worked primarily with Rugby, field hockey, volleyball, water polo, and canoe-kayak, along with launching the @Nutr4TeamUSA twitter, writing recipes, publishing articles, contributing to protocol papers, and working in the dining hall. At SDSU, she taught food science and conducted sponsored research on carbohydrate metabolism.
After graduating from SDSU in May 2014, she completed her dietetic internship at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX. She returned to the Olympic Training Center in April as a sport nutrition consultant to rowing, track cycling, BMX, triathlon, archery, and rugby.

The season runs from September through May. Practices are held Monday through Thursday from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 6:00 to 8:30 a.m.
The rowers compete at regattas in the fall and spring, and do conditioning and skill building work in the intervening period. A typical season starts with one or more entries at the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, the world’s largest 2-day rowing event with over 300,000 spectators and competitors from around the world. The full junior team, both varsity and novice, competes at the Head of the American regatta on the American River east of Sacramento, at various regattas in Southern California, and at the USRA Southwest Regional Junior Championships in Sacramento at the end of the regular season. Our varsity competes at the San Diego Crew Classic. When boats qualify at Regional Championships, they go on to compete at the USRA National Youth Championships in June.
The team enjoys excellent facilities. Our boathouse has two boat bays holding over 30 boats. Juniors are given priority over other club rowers in using the equipment. The workout room on the second floor of our boathouse has large windows and a wide balcony with expansive views of the bay. The ZLAC clubhouse is the focal point of the members’ social gatherings and events as well as the home of rowing artifacts and trophies from ZLAC’s long history.
In honor of our 125th anniversary, enjoy some of our favorite dishes from tastings past. Plus, Jill Agosti from Specialty Cellars will share her knowledge of wine in her entertaining style.
