Intro to Safe Cycling

Registration deadline: Thursday, November 22nd
Sometimes we can’t row! Bicycling is a great way to get around town; it’s healthy and fun. This class is an introduction to the principles of riding safely on roads shared with motor vehicles. Are you:
Able to ride a bike, but find cycling on the road more scary than fun?
Hoping to gain knowledge and confidence on the bike?
Wanting to crosstrain by cycling outdoors, instead of indoors?
Hoping to begin biking to work, school, appointments, ZLAC, etc.?
An experienced cyclist, but no one ever taught you the laws?
Just guessing at the rules of the road?
If so, then this course is for you!
Option 1: Classroom session only ($15)
9:00-10:00: Classroom session indoors, covering the principles of safe “vehicular cycling” and legal rights and responsibilities.
Option 2: Classroom session (above) AND on-bike sessions ($30)
10:00-11:00: On-bike in the parking lot, practicing bike handling and emergency maneuvers.
11:00-12:00: On-bike on the road, practicing riding safely in traffic, negotiating intersections, and in-lane positioning. This will be a slow and easy ride with frequent stops. After the parking lot session, instructor may disallow the student to continue if either feels that the student is not ready to ride safely on the road.
To participate in the on-bike sections of this course you MUST:
Wear a helmet.
Bring an appropriate bicycle in sound, working condition, ready to be ridden, air in the tires.
Be able to ride said bicycle reasonably well, i.e. being able to start, stop, turn, ride in a straight line, and look over your shoulder.
Minimum age 13. All must sign waiver, or if aged 13-17 have it signed by parent/guardian. In case of inclement weather, we will reschedule. Bring water, a snack if needed, and appropriate outdoor clothes, preferably in bright colors. Wear pants or tights that are skinny at the ankle, or you can bring a clip, velcro strip, or long socks to secure loose pants.

Junior Rowing Season
The season runs from September through May. Practices are held Monday through Thursday from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 6:00 to 8:30 a.m.
The rowers compete at regattas in the fall and spring, and do conditioning and skill building work in the intervening period. A typical season starts with one or more entries at the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston, the world’s largest 2-day rowing event with over 300,000 spectators and competitors from around the world. The full junior team, both varsity and novice, competes at the Head of the American regatta on the American River east of Sacramento, at various regattas in Southern California, and at the USRA Southwest Regional Junior Championships in Sacramento at the end of the regular season. Our varsity competes at the San Diego Crew Classic. When boats qualify at Regional Championships, they go on to compete at the USRA National Youth Championships in June.
The team enjoys excellent facilities. Our boathouse has two boat bays holding over 30 boats. Juniors are given priority over other club rowers in using the equipment. The workout room on the second floor of our boathouse has large windows and a wide balcony with expansive views of the bay. The ZLAC clubhouse is the focal point of the members’ social gatherings and events as well as the home of rowing artifacts and trophies from ZLAC’s long history.
